SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES

We have a large group of people 55+, singles and couples, that are active in all aspects of our church.  We invite you to join in any of our activities.  Some are listed below, but for more information contact Ruth Little, 327-4296 or [email protected].

Sunday Lunch
October 21st and December 16th - Join us for informal no-host lunch following the 11:00 am Sunday Services at a local restaurant.  All singles and couples - newcomers and seasoned members - over 55 are invited to join us to eat and enjoy.  Watch the Catalina News for place.

Day Trip
Beginning in the fall of '07, we will be offering opportunities for fellowship and education with trips to scenic, historical, or sometimes educational places.  Watch this space and the Catalina News for more information.

Low Impact Exercise Informational Meeting  Susan Cooper, a certified Tai Chi for Arthritis instructor, will meet with all of us interested in learning what this low impact exercise can do for us.  It is said to reduce pain, improve quality of life, increase muscle tone, improve balance, boosts immunity, and is safe and easy to learn.  Studies have shown it significantly reduces the falling incidence and is helpful for anyone, especially the senior crowd, male or female, arthritis or not.  We are looking to have a series of classes once a week for 8 weeks.  If enough people participate the cost will be nominal.  Please join us even if it's just to get your questions answered on Monday, October 15th, at 1 pm in Fellowship Hall.

Quarterly Senior Adult Newsletter
September 2007, look for a newsletter written specifically for our Catalina senior adults.  If you have not received one by September 30, please call Ruth at 327-4296.

Contest - Name our new Senior Newsletter         We need a catchy name for this newsletter and also for our Senior Group.  Submit your suggestions to me and if the Senior Adult Advisory Council chooses your entry, you'll win a special prize and the notoriety of being the winner!  Please enter by December 1.

Senior Forums
We are planning open meetings with subjects pertinent to seniors to begin in the fall of '07.

Health Sunday
On the first Sunday of the month, September through May, blood pressure screening is provided in the main office work room, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  Health information is also available.

Simple Meetings Involving Likeable Elders

S.M.I.L.E. is a program that connects the homebound person back to our church through volunteers.  Many people who can no longer attend church to be spiritually fed and nourished feel neglected, abandoned, and isolated.  Our volunteers make a re-connection with the homebound through regular monthly visits, phone calls, notes, cards, etc.  A visit from a S.M.I.L.E. volunteer brings a smile to the faces of the homebound and a smile to the face of the S.M.I.L.E. volunteers.  We feel that it also brings a smile to the face of Jesus.

Medical Equipment Loan Closet
We keep a closet of donated medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and shower stools, etc. to be loaned out at no cost.  This equipment and the supplies enhance safety, freedom of movement, and comfort during difficult times.  Donations are always appreciated.  To borrow or donate equipment, please contact M. Ruth Little at 327-4296, ext 108, or email
[email protected].

Resources and Referrals
Our resources and referrals library helps people find appropriate resources and services to improve and enhance the quality of their life.  This material is available in the Senior Adult Ministries office, E19, on the literature table outside the chapel, and on the Senior Adult Ministries bulletin board.

Pima Council of Aging
We have our own Catalina UMC ombudsman representative to the Pima County Council on the Aging.  She is available by appointment or phone call to share information and hear concerns.  To reach her, contact M. Ruth Little at 327-4296, ext 108.
