SHOP TIL U DROP OVERNIGHTER
IS DECEMBER 19, 20

Do you ever look back over the days off school (summer, spring break, Christmas break, etc) and wonder "Why didn't I do something really FUN with my time off school?" I know this is exactly what you are thinking. So, what are we going to do about it? We're going to have a RREEALLLLYYYY fun overnighter.
We'll do some good stuff, too. Here is what we have in store so far for Shop Til U Drop Overnighter. We will meet at the Tucson Mall at 2pm on Sunday, Dec. 19. We will wonder the mall in packs until 5pm when we will congregate in the food court. Purchasing and eating your dinner during this time would be advisable. Then we will go to Winterhaven to collect food for the Food Bank. We will be outside all evening, so dress warmly. Then we will go back to the church for a very special program and then we will spend the night at church: watching movies, playing games, sleeping, etc. On Monday morning, we will have breakfast, and then plan to be picked up around 10am. There is no cost for the event, except whatever money you spend at the mall and on dinner and we need you to bring some refreshment items. Guys need to bring a 2 liter bottle of pop each and girls need to bring a munchie: dessert or chips or dip, etc. You can bring this stuff to church with you on Sunday morning and we can store it in the youth room or kitchen. Yes, you can bring a friend with you, but sign ups are due THIS SUNDAY. I will come to both Sunday School classes and to youth group Sunday night, and you can sign up with me. You can also see me hanging around church on Sunday AM and sign up. Our you can call me and sign up (520-327-4296) or sign up via email (oooo-how hi tech! [email protected]). Permission slips will be handed out when you sign up and need to be returned when you come to the event.
SHOP TIL U DROP IS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH.

Debating whether or not to spend the night on Sun. Dec. 19th?? Well, now you HAVE to, because there will be a special presentation by youth of Christmas songs and skits. A variety show, if you will. It will be Christmas like you've never seen (or heard) it before! So come see Jonathan, Chris, Seth, Mark, and Anthony lead music into the night in the spirit of Christmas!!
Winter Camp Deadline is December 13
Most of you are like me: you've never been to Pine Canyon Camp. A few of you have. Pine Canyon is our South District United Methodist Camp. Programs are offered there during the summer and after Christmas-Winter Camp.
This year's Winter Camp would be a great time for you to check out Pine Canyon. I will be dean (that means head honcho) of camp and several people from Catalina are going.
The dates for Winter Camp are Dec. 27-30. The cost is $95, but camperships from the conference and help from our church are available. Please get an application from me (if you don't have one-one was included in the last newsletter) and send it in immediately.
I think we are going to have a great time at camp. You can meet other kids, grow closer to God, and have fun with the activities.
Keith Robinson and some of his friends are going to be providing music for us at camp. I'm looking forward to hearing them.
Our theme for the camp is "Are You There, God?". We will try to work through our faith-struggles together.

Each of you should have received a letter with your secret code number (no, no one has 007) and a card with instructions and request code numbers. Feel free to page Jodi or me for prayer or conversation any time. If you lose your card, see Jodi or me, we've got plenty. If you didn't get a letter with a code number, see me (Richard) and I will fix you up.

Richard's office is in the office building next to Jonathan's (and you are welcome) and Jodi's office is in E-21. Stop by, but remember it is a work in progress.

LETS START THINKING ABOUT EASTER!

I know, I know, it's not even Christmas yet.
But Christmas and Easter are our two biggest times of the year; and rightly so. They represent two awesome events in the life of the church and the history of the world: the coming of Christ to the world and His resurrection from the grave.
This year, I want to make the Lent/Easter season especially meaningful. I am planning a special Lenten series of studies for youth group (to be tied with a personal devotional for you to use daily), and I would like to have a 3 hour mini-retreat for Lent also.
What will make this complicated, yet also very meaningful is that Holy Saturday (the Saturday before Easter) is also Earth Day. We could plan something environmental as part of our retreat (possibly). And also the traditional sunrise service and pancake breakfast on Easter Sunday. I will need a lot of help with this. In fact, if some of you said, "Richard, we will handle that. We'll check the schedule with you and tell us what you need to do to help." I wouldn't turn you down. You folks are very involved in ministry and very capable. Let me know your thoughts on this service. Or better yet, get together and discuss it and TELL me what we are going to do. I can take orders. Just ask Debbie. You know, Easter is for middle school students, too.
Turkey Bash Financial: When all the dust settled, we came out around $120 ahead. This money went into youth scholarships. And that's good enough since this was also a SERVICE we were providing to the church, right?

30 Hour Famine Dates are March 17,18
30 Hour Famine is an opportunity for you and I both to experience hunger and do something about it. Here's how it works. In advance of the Famine, I explain it all to you and give you materials provided by World Vision. Then you go out and get sponsors who will give you money for going without food for 30 hours. We come to the church, stay overnight, have fun time, educational opportunities, and do a service project. Then we break our fast together with a meal. You may be wondering if you can do it (we do drink water and juice). Talk to Bethany Jones or me. We both have done it before. Check out the Famine website at www.30hourfamine.org.

ThanksThanksThanks
Special thanks to all of you who helped with the Turkey Bash and are helping with Advent Sunday School. One thing I have found to be true at Catalina is that you folks are dependable to help out when needed and to often go above and beyond the call of duty. I really extra appreciate those who stayed all Sunday afternoon and helped set up and also you brave souls who disregarded allergies and stayed late and cleaned up. THANK YOU!!

DCYM... Is it for YOU???
Starting in January, the District Council on Youth Ministry will begin to meet here at Catalina. It always meets on the 4th Sunday of each month at 3:30. We need a middle school and high school representative from our church. You would be through in time for choir. If you are interested, see Richard. The DCYM organizes the lock in and trips to YPC and Jr Hi Convention as well as several other local south district UMC events. Richard will be attending the meetings also.

Other Assorted Happenings

Festival of Faith 2000
This is an event for Christians of all denominations to come together to celebrate what we have in common: Jesus Christ! The event will be held at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix on Saturday, January 15. It will begin at 1pm with a concert for youth. The artist is unconfirmed, but negotiations are underway with DC Talk. The rest of the event will take place from 2-4pm with Tony Campolo as the speaker. He is an awesome speaker. I'm looking into the possibility of going to a Coyotes hockey game that night (might as well while we're in Phoenix, huh?). The Coyotes play the Mighty Ducks that night. Ticket cost is $6.50. Deadline to sign up for this event is January 9. Ticket money is due at that time. Available to middle school and high school.

YPC for High School is February 19-21
YPC will be held in Yuma this year and south district is chartering a bus. I understand all who went had a great time last year. I also understand that this would involve missing school on Monday, Feb. 21. I'm not sure if you can take that...

Phoenix Suns Game
On Friday, March 10 the Suns are playing the Jazz at America West Arena at 7pm. I thought it might be fun to go up for the game. Of course this is very far in advance, but I wanted you to mark your calendars to avoid any conflicts. We don't want conflicts, do we? Tickets for this event are quite pricey: $34. But then again, it's not required or anything. It's just a fun trip for those who can and want to go. Sign up deadline will need to be February 13. At that time, a $20 deposit will be due. Available to middle school and high school.

Jr Hi Convention is May 5-7
Jr Hi Convention is like YPC, except it is for middle school students. Did you figure that one out? It will be held in Kingman and south district is getting a bus for this one as well.

TIPS AND TIDBITS FOR PARENTS

Alienated Nation from Group Magazine July/August 1999

"In the wake of the worst school shootings in history, America is waking up to an unbelievable truth about its young people - millions of them feel progressively isolated from adult nurturing and influence. They feel alienated, boundary-less and alone - to the tune of 3½ hours per day, according to University of Chicago sociologist Barbara Schneider. Half of Americans say very few parents know what their teenagers are up to, and 9 out of 10 say parents aren't spending enough time with their kids."
In a Newsweek article, Patricia Hersch, author of A Tribe Apart, says, "Every kid I talked to at length eventually came around to saying without my asking that they wished they had more adults in their lives, especially their parents."
"The sobering truth is that our adult-crafted culture - the one you and I have fashioned and fueled - is actually toxic to our young people.
When parents and other adults leave kids' landscape, peers and media fill the power vacuum. That's the message of Hersch's A Tribe Apart - kids left alone to figure out life make incredibly bad choices. That's why all the public debate about gun control and violent video games, movies, and TV shows is so misguided. These are merely the produce of a tree that has root-rot.
The bad influences that surround kids can be blunted by nurturing adult connections."

What's Working in Sex Education from Group (see above)

"So-called abstinence-plus programs in public schools are the most effective at reducing teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases, according to a report in the Harvard Education Letter. The news comes amidst the decade-long decline in the teenage birth rate (though at 11%, the birth rate for American teenagers is by far the highest among industrialized nations). Abstinence-plus programs teach kids that 'unprotected sex is unsafe and that abstinence is the safest'."

"I had total freedom, and I was unbelievably envious of my friends with rules...I didn't feel I had an identity at all."
Moon Zappa, daughter of avant-garde rocker Frank Zappa, recalling her boundary-less teen years as quoted in Rolling Stone
INFO FOR YOUTH STAFF

Youth Specialties National Resouce Seminar is a 1 day workshop on youth ministry. It is informative, fast-paced, and FUN! You are invited to attend free of charge. The Tucson seminar is scheduled for March 31. It is an all-day thing and lunch is provided (as well as early morning donuts, etc.). Topics for the seminar sessions are:

  • Youth Ministry in the Third Millennium
  • Finding Your Place in Ministry
  • Meeting Kids' Deepest Needs
  • 30 Great Ideas for Your Ministry
This is the kind of thing that you take your whole team to, so why not join us? Let me know by January 31 if you can make it.

LOCAL TRAINING NEWS
Six of us attended our first Sunday night youth leader training in November. I think this is a good start. I am looking forward to great things ahead. We meet bi-monthly at 9:30am on Sunday in the youth room.
Our next meeting is planned for January 9. I would like to see all of our Sunday night helpers there for sure and anyone else interested in our youth ministry. By the way, the Youth Specialties Seminar will serve as our March training event, so do all you can to attend. I know it will involve getting off work for some of you, but it will be well worth it!

THE EVENTUAL GOAL
One project that I have my eye on is re-forming our Youth Ministry Team probably into the image it was originally intended - with a couple of twists that would be personal to how I do ministry.
These last few months have been a whirlwind for me and my family and I think it will be next fall before I can say I have completely learned the ropes. We look back and say, "I can't believe we've been here for almost 7 months!"
Anyway, as I get acclimated and get some of the very immediate things dealt with I want to work on giving as much ministry away as possible. I think things should be able to function here without me. That's the goal - train you folks to do the ministry. But not so I can back off. I love this stuff too much to quit. But so we can multiply our ministry to even more youth and to a greater depth with each youth.
