TURKEY BASH IS SCHEDULED FOR
NOVEMBER 28
This is the event each year in which the youth group hosts and serves the entire church and has a great time in doing so! Plans are under way to make this a great Turkey Bash this year! Of course to do that, we will need help from EACH ONE OF YOU! This Sunday (Nov 7) and next Sunday (Nov 14) you will have a chance to sign up for your part in Turkey Bash. I will bring the sign up sheet around in Sunday School and it will be in youth group also. Of course you can call me to sign up also. Deadline to volunteer is Sunday Nov. 14. Many groups are doing booths. The UMW is providing all the baked goods for a cake walk and all we have to do is provide the workers, and the youth group gets to keep the money raised!

THE PLAN SO FAR:

  • Begin at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
  • Booths and food in operation from 5-7 p.m.
  • Square Dancing and Line Dancing on the basketball court from 6:30-8 p.m.
  • Movie room for children open in the youth room from 5-6:30 p.m.

Here are some of the areas we are going to need help with:

  • Selling tickets at the ticket table
  • Operating game booths
  • Working at the pizza and pop booth
  • Staffing the game room
  • Getting hay, etc. and setting up the basketball court
  • Staffing the movie room
  • Operating the cake walk
  • Being excited participants in the square dancing and line dancing

If we have enough people, we can schedule our work in shifts and give you a chance to have some free time or to trade jobs with someone else.

Advent Sunday School Can "Nudge" Our Children
Most of us grow spiritually in one of two ways. There are times when we take a giant leap forward. Like camp or some other experience. Another we way grow (and it's more common) is by "nudge".
Seemingly normal events can push us closer to God little by little. Holidays can do this, if God is remembered and honored.
We have a chance to be a part of this during Advent. As a youth group, we are going to serve the children and families of our church by leading an advent Sunday School program during the four Sundays of Advent.
We will meet in the chapel at 9:30 on Nov. 28, Dec. 12 and 19. We will meet in c-207 (the youth room) on Dec. 5.
Each week we will spend a lot of time singing Christmas carols. We want to pass these on to our spiritual little brothers and sisters. We will use puppets, have stories, show occasional video, and light the advent candles. Sign ups for this are also this Sunday and next (Nov. 7, 14) and there will be a preparation meeting on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 20 from 1-4 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

PRAYER PAGERS ARE OPERATIONAL!
Each of you should have received a letter with your secret code number (no, no one has 007) and a card with instructions and request code numbers. Feel free to page Jodi or me for prayer or conversation any time. If you lose your card, see Jodi or me, we've got plenty. If you didn't get a letter with a code number, see me (Richard) and I will fix you up.

How to Find Us
Richard's office is in the office building next to Jonathan's (and you are welcome) and Jodi's office is in E-21. Stop by, but remember it is a work in progress.

Horseback Riding Make Ups are November 14
This is the tentative date for those who didn't get to ride last week due to lack of time. We will have a pizza party after church and then go RIDE! We may be able to take a few extra people with us, so see Jodi if you are interested.

Advance Sign Ups Have Become a Necessity!
Who would have thought that we would take almost 50 people on the Colossal Caves trip? Not me, for one. But we did. In order to keep things organized, we are going to have to do advance sign ups on almost all youth events. This makes sure that everyone has a spot and a ride. Sign up deadlines will be at least a week in advance. Starting with...

Shop Til U Drop
December 19, 20
The traditional Shop Til U Drop overnighter will be held in conjunction with our Christmas party on Sunday-Monday Dec. 19, 20. This is necessitated by a very full church holiday calendar. After talking to some of you and getting a little history of the event, here is what is planned.

Sunday Dec 19
2pm -  Meet at Tucson Mall
5pm -  Gather for Dinner
6pm -  Collect food at Winterhaven for Community Food Bank
9pm -  Return to church for overnighter

Monday Dec 20

The schedule is yet to be determined.

There will be a sign up form for this available in the next couple of weeks. Sign up will be required. We will be able to take extras as long as we have transportation.

SKI SEASON IS UPON US!!!
The dates of our Ski Trip this year are Feb. 24-26. The package has been scaled down a little to make it more affordable. We are still skiing at Purgatory and we will be lodging at the Hampton Inn in Durango. The cost for those of us 13 and older is $175. Those 12 and under go for $150.
Now, here's the deal. We need to have at least 20 sign up to go on the trip. The first deposit of $40 is due by November 21. At that time, I will know if we have enough to pursue the trip. I will need $40 more by Dec. 10, and the balance will be due Feb. 15.

Church Workday is Nov 13
Catalina is good to its youth! We are funded and supported in so many ways. Now it is our opportunity to give something back. The trustees have requested that I recruit a team of youth for the work day. There are some jobs which may not be done if we don't show up to do them. These jobs include doing some repairs around the basketball court (and the fence around the roof), putting more sand on the playground, painting, etc. Can you help? If you could meet me outside the youth room door at 10:30 a.m., we can get started. This is for everyone. Guys, girls, middle school, high school, parents, youth leaders... everyone and anyone who can help. Even if you can just stay for part of the time, your help will be appreciated.
Hey, lets be givers and not just takers on the church food chain!! That's your science lesson for this month, thank you.

DCYM... Is it for YOU???
Starting in January, the District Council on Youth Ministry will begin to meet here at Catalina. It always meets on the 4th Sunday of each month at 3:30. We need a middle school and high school representative from our church. You would be through in time for choir. If you are interested, see Richard. The DCYM organizes the lock in and trips to YPC and Jr Hi Convention as well as several other local south district UMC events. Richard will be attending the meetings also.

Other Assorted Happenings
Winter Camp December 27-30
This is going to be a great time at Pine Canyon Camp for all South District youth! Your own youth director, Richard Jones, will be the dean of the camp. I'm hoping to make this the best Winter Camp ever! A brochure is enclosed. We are going to have such a GREAT time at Winter Camp. I am looking forward to it more than anything else, I think! Camperships from the district and scholarship help from the church are available. Yes, you can bring a friend to Winter Camp.

Festival of Faith 2000
This is an event for Christians of all denominations to come together to celebrate what we have in common: Jesus Christ! The event will be held at Bank One Ballpark in Phoenix on Saturday, January 15. It will begin at 1pm with a concert for youth. The art-ist is unconfirmed, but negotiations are underway with DC Talk. The rest of the event will take place from 2-4pm with Tony Campolo as the speaker. He is an awesome speaker. I'm looking into the possibility of going to a Coyotes hockey game that night (might as well while we're in Phoenix, huh?). The Coyotes play the Mighty Ducks that night. More info will be forthcoming.

Phoenix Suns Game
On Friday, March 10 the Suns are playing the Jazz at America West Arena at 7pm. I thought it might be fun to go up for the game. Of course this is very far in advance, but I wanted you to mark your calendars to avoid any conflicts. We don't want conflicts, do we?

YPC for High School is February 19-21
YPC will be held in Yuma this year and south district is chartering a bus. I understand all who went had a great time last year. I also understand that this would involve missing school on Monday, Feb. 21. I'm not sure if you can take that...

Jr Hi Convention is May 5-7
Jr Hi Convention is like YPC, except it is for middle school students. Did you figure that one out? It will be held in Kingman and south district is getting a bus for this one as well.

TRAINING FOR SUNDAY NIGHT WORKERS WILL BE HELD
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 14 AT 9:30 a.m. in C-207

Hey, I'm hip enough to work with kids.
Really. I am.
OK, this is it! How do you work with youth? How do you lead a discussion? What does it mean to be a spiritual caregiver? All of these questions and more will be answered at our bi-monthly staff meeting/training session. The next one will be held on January... well, I don't know yet. I'll set the date when I know when the youth choir is singing. We don't want to miss that, do we? We have been trying to find a good time to meet with the entire youth ministry team. I have been thinking that possibly on the months that we don't have staff training at 9:30, we could meet with the YMT at that time. Would this work for you? Try to let me know by the end of the month. This would then be a once a month thing for our Sunday night staff, (because I would want them to come to the YMT meeting if possible) and once every other month for the rest of the YMT.

Busy Youth Calendar Requires HELP!!!!!
I really appreciate all the parental help with the Colossal Caves trip. You people are as good as gold. I mean it. Now I must ask you to come to the aid of your youth director one more time. Actually, several more times. The first one is the Turkey Bash. See me and sign up to help. If you wanted to take over a booth or part of the responsibilities for the event, that would be awesome. Try to talk to me SOON so I can RELAX, knowing you are on the job.
Shop Til U Drop overnighter is then the next event. The main thing we will need help with here is drivers to transport students from the mall to Winterhaven and then to the church. We probably will need some folks to do breakfast Monday morning and we may need drivers then, too, depending on what we do. Please consider helping with this. Email is usually a good way to get in touch with me. Often if I just hear it and don't write it down, I forget it before you're through talking to me. Especially on Sunday, since it can be hectic. So send me an email, or write me a note and give it to me when you see me on Sundays. Thanks a lot for your help.

By the way...
  1. I'm currently working on next year's youth ministry budget. If you have input for that, let me know as soon as possible.
  2. Winter Camp is coming up Dec. 27-30. Could any of you come with us as staff? It's going to be a lot of fun, and of course, you would go FREE! WOOHOO!!
