Colossal Outing Is Planned for October 31
Colossal Cave and Horseback Riding

Many of you will be busy on the evening of October 31. You will be collecting candy (trick-or-treating-come on, high schoolers, grow up!). You may be handing out candy. You may be guarding your house against pranks by young hooligans, who knows. So we have planned a special afternoon activity for that week. We will leave church around 12:30 and travel to Colossal Cave Park. There we will eat a picnic lunch (it is bring your own lunch, we will have coolers) and then we will go horseback riding and then we will tour the Colossal Cave. Truly a colossal afternoon! We will then return to church in plenty of time for you to participate in whatever festivities you have planned. Be sure to bring long pants to change into and close toed shoes (no sandals).

The cost of this event is $15 (that's almost $12 off the regular cost), BUT we don't want anyone to stay home because of the cost. Scholarships are available. Talk to Richard.

Youth Choir will need to practice briefly from 12:15 to 12:30 (since you will be singing the next week). We will have a brief devotional time at the park and you should be back at the church by 4pm. Families are welcome to participate in this activity and we will need drivers for this trip. Yes, you can bring friends with you. Youth Room Is Lookin' Good!

Youth Room is Lookin' Good!

On Sunday, September 26, several of our high school students spent the afternoon cleaning up and decorating the youth room. I want to say a A big THANK YOU to them for their hard work! The room looks great and all the junk in the corner has needed sorting out for a long time!

The Return of the Prayer Pager!!!

What's a prayer pager?

Good question. A prayer pager is a regular pager that can be used to quickly, easily, and privately deliver prayer concerns. How does it work? You see Richard to get a secret code #. This number will identify you and you will be the only one to have that number. There is also a list of prayer concern codes. I will get these printed up on cards, but until then, you could print and cut out this list and put it in your wallet, purse, notebook, etc.

Here are the codes:
  1. Test today
  2. Game today
  3. Feeling down
  4. School problem
  5. Better grades
  6. Opportunity to share faith
  7. I'm sick
  8. Boyfriend/Girlfriend problems
  9. My friend has a need
  1. Friend needs to know Jesus
  2. I need to talk to you today
  3. I need info on a youth activity
  4. Problem with my dad
  5. Problem with my mom
  6. Problem with my brother
  7. Problem with my sister
  8. Problem with a teacher
  9. Medical need for myself
  1. Medical need for a friend
  2. Job problem
  3. Need a job
  4. Making a hard decision
  5. Temptation
  6. Help with relationship with God
  7. $$ problem
  8. Special need
  9. Other

Who has a prayer pager?

Richard has one: (520) 218-1612
Jodi has one: (520) 566-4455

Here's what to do:
When you hear the tone, do the following:
  • Enter your secret code #
  • Press the star (*) button
  • Enter the code of your prayer request
  • Then you can hang up.
  • If you would like us to call you back, after your request code number, press the star (*) button again and then enter your phone number. It's that easy!

BRIEF (17 min) Youth Ministry Team meeting will be held Sunday, Oct 24 at 10:30 outside Richard's office door on the Pine Tree Patio. See You At The Pole Was Big in Tucson!!!!

It was exciting to hear so many of you share what happened at your schools during SYATP. I'm really proud of all of you who participated. It's always awesome to see what God will do when we honor Him. If you missed SYATP, there's always next year. But don't wait until next year. You can set aside a time to pray with your friends at school each week. Imagine what that could start on your campus!

One other thought: In the last couple of years there has been a lot of WWJD (What Would Jesus Do?) stuff-bracelets, necklaces, books, etc. To make the hugest possible impact on your school for God, don't just wear the gear or ask the question-LIVE THE LIFE. Do at school what Jesus would do.

Other Assorted Happenings

HEY Conference Is Set for October 16
What is a HEY Conference, you ask? It's where we all get together and learn to talk Southern. Like, "HEY, y'all." or "HEY Bubba." or ... well, you get the picture. Is that what a HEY Conference really is? I couldn't fool you, could I? HEY stands for Hunger Education for Youth. The HEY Conference is going to be a time that you can get together with youth from other churches all over Tucson and find out about the problem of hunger, what can be done about it, and actually have a chance to DO something about it that day! We will have skits, an opportunity to make sandwiches for homeless people and distribute them, and a lot more. This is a chance to do something about a real problem in our area. Did you know that statistics tell us that 1 out of 3 children in Tucson are hungry?
The conference is from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, October 16. The cost is $5 for lunch and materials. We will meet in the social hall at First UMC 915 E 4th St. Yes, you can bring a friend with you!

Pine Canyon Camp Work Weekend Nov. 5-7
Be a part of the crew that repairs and improves the camp. I am hoping to go up for this myself, but I'm still tentative at this point.

Winter Camp December 27-30
This is going to be a great time at Pine Canyon Camp for all South District youth! Your own youth director, Richard Jones, will be the dean of the camp. I'm hoping to make this the best Winter Camp ever! Look for a brochure later this month. Camperships from the district and scholarship help from the church are available.

TRAINING OPTIONS FOR SUNDAY NIGHT WORKERS

Several of you adult volunteers serve or have volunteered to serve every Sunday night during our youth meetings. This is great! We need several adults in our group so we can increase the opportunity for each youth to connect with an adult. Also, we want to use a small group / discussion group format as often as possible, so multiple leaders are needed. But how can you feel more confident and be more effective in helping on Sunday night? This is a question I want to address. I am a firm believer in the idea that if someone volunteers for a role, they should be equipped for that role and supported in it. How are we going to do that? I want to offer training every other month for our Sunday night staff. This will be practical stuff and I will give you resources that will help. Plus, I hope Jodi and I can give you a "heads up" on lesson topics for the future. You might know of some ideas we can use. What about meeting once every second month at 9:30? This would mean missing what you normally do at 9:30, but it would only once every 8 weeks or so, and it would keep us from coming out at another time. Another option would be to meet after the 11am service and I would feed you lunch. Let me know which is better. I can do either. If you have a preference, tell me by the 17th. OK?

Other Youth Ministry Sub-Teams Will Meet as Needed

We have other groups who function besides just our Sunday night staff. Our worship group is one of them. Presently they get together at 4:30 or so to practice and prepare for the evening. This group has been doing a great job and I appreciate all their work. The worship segment is one of the favorite parts of YWAV and I hope one of the most meaningful.

People who are interested in sharing in missions/service projects with the youth will be able to get more info and offer help and input to Paul Wilson in the near future. Paul is working with me to organize this critical area of ministry.

When we have major events, these will require a leadership team of their own. Some of these are the Turkey Bash, Ski Trip, Overnighters, etc. Leadership for these events will be recruited as needed and then disbanded after the event is completed and evaluated. If some of you have ideas for events, let me know.

We could also use a transportation team that would help with driving and recruiting driving help when needed. How about a chaperone team? These would be people who would volunteer to help with regular monthly-type events (like our trip to Colossal Cave, etc).

We are already forming a prayer team that will uphold our youth, families, leaders, and events in prayer. Becky Cowart has volunteered to help with this team.

By the way...
  1. I'm currently working on next year's youth ministry budget. If you have input for that, let me know as soon as possible.
  2. I need some empty food cans to take to the HEY Conference with me (soup or veggie size). Please rinse them out and remove the label and bring them to me by the 16th of October.
