From Fellowship to Friendship
The central role of any group in a Christian's life.
Not a lecture series but the formation of a short-term group (8 weeks) which encourages each other to develop as group members, as well as group facilitators. Gives the members a chance to experience a small group as well as lead with encouragement from the group. Skills are applicable to any group setting from committees to study groups.
Starting date: Feb. 7, 7:00-8:30 p.m.
Place: Catalina United
Methodist Church library
Childcare provided at CUMC.

The Catalina United Methodist Foundation announces the formation of the Tres Cruces Society. A group of like-minded persons formed this society to aid the church as it goes into the next millennium. Tres Cruces is committed to the concept of Stewardship for the future by the use of bequests and gifts through estate planning now. The members of Tres Cruces have included the church through the Foundation in their estate plan. They are happy to acknowledge this to the congregation and hope that their example may encourage others to do likewise. The amount of the gift or bequest is not a part of the philosophy of this group.
There will be a luncheon on Sunday, February 21 @ 12:15 p.m. to honor this group. More importantly those attending will hear thoughts about the future of the church and how gifts and bequests through endowments can play a part of this future. Planned Gifts will be discussed by church members who are actually using them. Those who would like to leave something to the church but don't want to short change their heirs can learn how to do it at this meeting. Those who would like to make a gift but still want the income for their lifetime and would like some of the income to be tax free can also learn how to do that. THE LUNCHEON IS OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF CATALINA CHURCH. Please call the Church office by Wednesday, February 17, if you wish to attend.

Project Hospitality
We have had an excellent response to our Project Hospitality program for the homeless. We have six men on Tuesday and Friday nights through February, 1999. All dinner meals have been signed up for. We need more people to act as hosts starting at 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 a.m. This can be for the entire night or split from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and from 9:30 to 6:45 a.m. Sign up and information sheets are available on Sunday in the patio (for Tuesday) and in Fellowship Hall (for Friday) or in the church office during the week. Please check the sign up sheets or call the church office (327-4296) to sign up or for further information.

Some Notes from John...
A few changes in our choir program have been made lately that you may be interested in knowing.
1. The director of our Chorister and Victory Choirs since September, Wendy Nicholls, has moved to Tempe to do her student teaching requirement. We have been without a director for these two choirs since Christmas.
2. We are happy to report that Becky Foreman will be directing the Chorister Choir (4 years old through 2nd graders) starting on Sunday, Feb. 7. So parents of these children will want to have their children present when we start this choir back up on that day at 10:30 a.m.
3. We will be combining the Victory Choir (6th, 7th, 8th graders) with the YWAV Singers (Sr Hi) for the remainder of this season. These two choirs will start their rehearsals together on Sunday, Feb. 7, at 4:30.
4. Our Celebration Kids/Choir program has been moved back to Wednesdays (they had been meeting on Sundays since last fall). They met last Wednesday (Jan. 27), and will meet each Wednesday throughout the rest of this season. All those who had to drop out due to Sunday conflicts will be welcomed back! Car pools are being operated for those with transportation problems. All 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are urged to become a part of this wonderful ministry of Christian education and singing.

Special Notice From UMW

We will be updating you in the months to come, but we want to share our enthusiasm with you. The Bazaar will be held in Fellowship Hall on October 30, 1999.
Can you believe.., the Craft and Fellowship Workshops are already in place! As always they will produce unusual and lovely unique items for your shopping pleasure.
The workshops are held in Room E-18 the second Wednesday and the fourth Tuesday of each month beginning at 9:00 a.m.
This is a rare opportunity to make new friends - to work on assorted craft projects and to share that wonderful Fellowship that we find in our church.
Everyone is welcome... The coffee pot will be on... Come join us!
Remember, as always, the Great Red Bazaar will feature crafts of all kinds, green living plants, wonderful baked goods, books, serendipities to delight you! Watch for further information.

Communion Emergency Fund
That time of year when many persons are passing through Tucson has come again. Travelers' Aid seeks to minister to families first and then single persons who are moving to verifiable work. This leaves individuals or couples to find whatever help they can from churches, day jobs, and persons they run on to in their stay here.
Besides this perennial group of persons, there are also emergencies among our members who need some temporary assistance with monthly expenses to keep food on the table and utilities covered.
The Emergency Fund receives most of its resources from those who wish to give as they receive communion.
If this is a ministry you feel strongly about and wish to support at this time, the Fund can use whatever you can give.

Catalina Offers Sunday School for ALL Ages!
Stop and pick up a copy of the 1998 Fall Christian Education brochure in the sanctuary narthex, the Sunday school office, or the church office.
It lists the Sunday school groups and age levels, topics, times and places that happen on Sunday mornings for children, youth and adults. It also lists many midweek opportunities for Bible study and small group participation.
It's an exciting time of year for children to join their age level Sunday school classes and have fun while learning about Bible people in the Old Testament and to celebrate the wondrous seasons of Advent and Christmas. Parents are always welcome to come and visit the classrooms, especially until your child feels comfortable in a new situation. Questions about our educational ministry? Call Joyce Thornton, 327-4296.

Stewardship Thought
Consecration Sunday is March 7. On that Sunday we will be asked to make a financial commitment that reflects our "need as a giver to give." Another way to look at this is that giving is a part of our own spiritual development and Christian commitment. Please keep this in your prayers in the weeks ahead.
Needed:
A good, used washing machine for our custodial staff. Please call Church Office if you can help.

Passing The Hats

The Susanna Wesley Bible Study Group is sponsoring making knit and crocheted hats for the homeless people. If you are crafty, we have patterns and yarn to help you with this project.

New Walkers Class
Why study Luke? Many Biblical scholars feel it is one of the most beautiful of the New Testament books. Why? Maybe because it is written from a Gentile healer's point of view. Luke had the opportunity to speak with many of Jesus' contemporaries. Luke, primarily, was interested in Jesus' ministry as a healer. In today's society there are many of us who need to know what Jesus had to say to all who need healing. Join the Walkers class Sunday mornings at 11:00 in room H232 to talk about how the Bible can nourish us.
