February Newsletter

Volume 2, Issue 8 February 2001

Ski Trip Final Info
Final details on the ski trip (actually WINTER RETREAT) for this year are available and are being mailed to the people signed up for the trip. We have spots left for 1 guy and two girls.
The base cost of the trip is $89 and then skiing cost is on top of that. Full info is available in the Snowblast 2001 brochure. I am calling it a WINTER RETREAT this year because we are offering activity options for non-skiers on this trip. Snowtubing and horseback riding are among the activities our non-skiers will take part in. We are staying at the Best Western Sunrise Inn.
Remember that a completed notarized permission/medical release form is required.

Missions Trip Details
to Be Presented
Input on our missions trip choices was divided, but slightly in favor of the Los Angeles trip. For this project, we will work with the Center for Student Missions in urban LA with the homeless and hungry.
The other trip we considered was a trip to Camp Surf, the San Diego YMCA. Camp Surf facilitates mission trips into Tijuana to do construction and repair projects on homes, orphanages, etc.
Both trips are worthy endeavors. And I have always wanted to do more than one missions trip each year. So, the plan that I am pursuing is this: we will do the CSM Los Angeles trip this summer, and then we will take a group to Camp Surf over Labor Day weekend (Friday August 31 - Monday September 3). This is still in the planning stages, but this is a good plan for us, I think.
We will present our missions program for this year on Sunday, February 11 at 11am in the youth room (C-207). We will watch a video about the mission site and discuss our plans and trip requirements. This trip is open to any middle school or high school student, but we can only take 30. The dates are July 22-27.

Time to Register for
Y P C
Young People's Convention (YPC) is the annual gathering of all high school youth of the Desert Southwest Conference. This year YPC is being held in Las Vegas on Feb. 17-19. Brochures are available in the youth room. Regular registration (only until Feb. 5) is $70 and late registration in $80. We will take a tour bus from the South District. This means we would need to leave around 1am on Saturday, Feb. 17, and we would not be back until 10pm on Monday, Feb. 19. We do not get Presidents' Day off school, so if you go to YPC, you will miss a day of school. This is a choice you and your parents will have to make. At the local level, we can't do anything about when YPC is scheduled, and since it is so far away, it wouldn't make much sense to come back early. Let me know this week if you are going so I can save you a spot on the bus.

Go to www.catumc.org and then click on the "about Catalina" button. In the "announcements" section, click on "youth". And there you are! I will begin to put a weekly article on the website that will have the latest info and will also include a devotional or inspirational thought for each week. By the way, if you are on AOL, put my AOL screen name on your buddy list (richibaby) and IM me if you see me online! Or just send me email to the address above.

Confirmation Retreat
is March 9-11
Friday March 9 through Sunday March 11 are the dates for our Confirmation Retreat at the Triangle Y Camp Ranch in Oracle. We will study. We will spend lots of time together. We will have lots of fun. And we will participate in lots of outdoor activities. I would love to see many of you on the climbing wall/rappelling tower! A letter with all the details will be going out to our confirmands soon, but I wanted to put this in the newsletter for everyone for these reasons:
  1. If you are a high school junior or senior and have not been confirmed, we will offer a special "short course" for you that will begin on this retreat. This is the time for you to jump in!!
  2. We would like to have some of you already confirmed 8th graders or high schoolers serve as mentors/small group leaders for the retreat. Talk to Richard if you are interested.
  3. Some of you would just like to go on the retreat and participate in the classes and activities. This would be a good "booster shot" for your confirmation, and we would love to have you.
SO...if you are not a member of the regular confirmation class, but are interested in the retreat, contact Richard Jones and let him know by February 18. He will send you all the details you need.
