In every generation, The United
Methodist Church and each of its predecessor denominations have
compiled and adopted an official hymnal. Our current hymnal, The United Methodist Hymnal, was adopted by vote of the 1988 General Conference and published in 1989. It replaced The Book of Hymns, published by the former Methodist Church in 1966, and The Hymnal, published by the former Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1957. These in turn, replaced The Methodist Hymnal, published in 1935 by the three denominations that united in 1939 to form The Methodist Church: The Evangelical Hymnal, published in 1921 by the Evangelical Association; and The Church Hymnal, published in 1935 by the United Brethren in Christ. These hymnals have been supplemented by unofficial books such as The Faith We Sing (2000), Supplement to The Book of Hymns (1982) and The Cokesbury Worship Hymnal (1938). |
