Worship: The Main Thing

Worship is the main thing we do. Services of worship are the only times in the congregation when the whole assembly is united in a common activity: to remember God's mighty acts and praise God's holy name. Worship is what makes us different and unique from other organizations in the world.

THE CHOIR AS WORSHIP LEADER

One of our primary functions is to help the congregation sing better. We use our gifts to undergird, support, enhance, strengthen, and embellish the corporate ministry of song. Our anthem is infused with spiritual understanding, and presented to God as a gift on the behalf of the entire congregation. It is a spiritual sacrifice in which all play important roles, and through which hearts may be inflected towards true worship. Our role is one of ministry rather than performance. We are first and foremost offering up a gift to God, and then (and only then) to the congregation. Choir members must understand that, in order to lead effectively in worship, we must come prepared spiritually as well as musically. We must come on Thursday & Sunday having walked with and worshipped God throughout the week. Our purpose is to honor God by preparing and prompting God's people in corporate and individual expressions of adoration to our Redeemer.

SINGING!

It is the voice of the Church that is heard in singing together.
It is not you that sings, it is the Church that is singing,
and you, as a member of the Church, may share in its song.
Thus all singing together...serves to widen our spiritual horizon,
makes us see our little company as a member
of the great Christian Church on earth,
and help us willingly and gladly to join our singing,
be it feeble or good, to the song of the Church!

-Dietrich Bonhoffer

AN INSIGHT:
Whether anything happens in rehearsal and worship is a wondrous and mysterious combination of what we plan, what we bring with us, and what the Holy Spirit does with those two realities. The hymn that one of us deplores may be the hymn that touches someone else in a nearly life-saving way. The anthem one of us finds sluggish and boring may be touching someone else at the root of his or her being. The exuberant chorus which one of us finds distasteful and out of place may be something that someone else has been hungering for for years. So part of the music ministry of the church is a patient kind of participation in which we realize that even if what we're singing or hearing at this moment isn't lighting us up, the fact that we're singing it is helping to light someone else up,
and that is a sacred privilege!

DO YOU HAVE YOUR NAME TAG ON TONIGHT?  It's not fair to our new members to have to guess our names. (And it's especially embarrassing to those of us who have trouble remember names!) Let's advertise who we are by wearing our tags. If you have misplaced yours and need a new one be sure to write your name on an index card and give to John. Have you introduced yourself to our new family members? Have you welcomed them to our family? Remember our ministry of hospitality!

Please remember to leave off the perfume, cologne, hair spray, shaving lotion, etc. on Thursdays and Sundays! The wonderful fragrance you love to put on just may be the fragrance that your singing neighbors can't tolerate because of allergies and sensitivities - especially when we're sitting close together and breathing so deeply.  Please think about this courtesy to those around you the next time you want to "smell good".

THE 5-MINUTE VOCAL WORKOUT - The following is a simple, 5-minute, basic regimen to provide daily exercise for your voice:
  1. Relax - mentally walk through your body and relieve it of all tension.
  2. Stretch - reach for the sky, roll your shoulders and head.
  3. Align - stand with feet slightly spread and align your body in preparation for singing.
  4. Open - inhale and exhale on an "oh" vowel shape, jaw unhinged, to open the singing area.
  5. Soft - gently, in a comfortable spot in your range, begin singing an "ooh", and move up  and down a few pitches while concentrating on relaxing and consistent tone.
  6. Support - glide your voice from a low, but comfortable pitch, up an octave and back  down again. Add energy and abdominal strength as you ascend. Move the starting  pitch up and try it again.
  7. Vowel - select a vowel (ee, eh, ah, oh, oo, etc.), and sing a five-note scale up and down.  Advance to an eight note scale. Concentrate on keeping all the vowels tall (soft palate  raised) and consistent.
If you tried this for one week, every day, you would help your voice develop good vocal habits which would positively impact your singing on a regular basis.

HEALTHY BREATH SUPPORT
  • breathe in slowly and deeply
  • watch a baby - we are born breathing correctly. A baby's belly will rise and fall while the chest cavity remains slightly lifted. We learn to breathe incorrectly later in life.
  • blow out a candle - while holding the pointer finger 8 inches in front of the mouth, imagine gently blowing on a candle. Progressively blow longer and stronger using deeper air (from the diaphragm) and move the "candle" further away from the mouth.
  • unvoiced consonants - f-h-k-p-sh-s-t. These have only air behind them. Your belly should bounce in toward the spine with each consonant.
  • feel the air go to the toes. Imagine you have a pinwheel 6 inches from your mouth and gently blow on the edge to make it turn. Who can keep their pinwheel rotating the longest without taking a new breath?

LET'S WORK ON TONE COLOR.....

Experiment with DARK & BRIGHT tone differences.
Think dark - way back in your throat - think covered
Think bright - forward by your teeth - think uncovered
Think in between - find pleasing places in between

LET'S WORK ON MOVEMENT.....

Your whole body is your vocal instrument. Always be moving (however slightly) in order to maintain a relaxed and productive posture.
Lean into it
Keep the sound moving
It helps to shift the body weight (left to right, front to back) and bend slightly at the knees and ankles.

LET'S WORK ON BREATHING.....

Stand in a good singing posture. Let your jaw drop to a released, low position as you exhale. Before you inhale - plan to take the breath in so that it expands the rib cage. Place one hand on the lowest rib cage and the other on and above your belt line. Remember, there should be no upper body movement, including shoulders, when you inhale.

Now, inhale - so that the air flows directly to the belt line and expands the rib cage visibly. Now, without changing anything, exhale (sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly) engaging the abdominal muscles below the rib cage. You may want to try this at home in front of a mirror. Just think of expanding the rib cage.

BREATHE IN GOD'S LOVE & LIGHT
BREATHE OUT WHATEVER IS TROUBLING YOU
REMEMBER TO BREATHE!

OUR NEW PIANO!!

Due to a fantastic Baldwin piano sale, we have purchased a new 6'3" Baldwin ebony grand piano for the chancel. And now that we can use our new chancel, we are able to use it!  With some financial help from a family in the church, we were able to pay the "grand" total of $18,876.08. We had $17,490.57 in our fund which has been collecting over the past few years. The piano regularly sells for $30,710, but with the special sale price of $19,018, and another 10% church discount, we were able to get the piano, plus a cover and dolly, for the above amount. It comes with an "artists" adjustable bench and free delivery and tuning. It was a deal we couldn't refuse, and we are getting one of the best pianos made! Thank you to all who have contributed to our piano fund over the years. We will dedicate it to the glory of God, along with the new chancel, next fall.

For detailed information about this piano, click on the picture.  Information about the Baldwin Piano Company is available at their web site (http://www.baldwinpiano.com/).
